Proyect: A Place to eat at Tinajita Jail

Project Location:

TINAJITA JAIL AND DETENTION CENTER, PANAMA.

Brief description and objective of the Project:

Provide the Jail with 12 tables and chairs so that detainees can sit down to eat their meals in groups of 120 (usual number of prisoners per gallery). Presently prisoners pick up the food and either, eat sitting on the floor, or take the meals to the gallery to eat on their bunk-beds. The Tinajita jail houses between 600 and 700 people. Living conditions are appalling and have been improving since a group of Rotarians from Panama Sur Rotary Club "adopted" the Tinajita detention center some 2 ½ years ago. A core group of Rotarians the "Tinajita Committee", visits Tinajita every Wednesday to supervise donations and push for further improvements.

Who and how many people will benefit?

Approximately 900 detainees will benefit, by having a place to sit down and eat their meals. Usually they have to take the food with them to the galleries, a health hazard and breeding ground for bugs, rodents and diseases.

How will the project be organized and supervised?

By the Tinajita Committee, a group of Rotarians that visits the Jail every week (Wednesdays). The Tinajita Committee is very well organized and will supervise the project. The Committee has already organized and completed more than 20 different projects at Tinajita in the past two years.

What role will our club take in its development?

Our Club will choose and buy the appropriate and necessary ("jail approved") equipment (tables and chairs).

What will our club provide in the way to funds, personnel, buildings, equipment, etc?

Our Club already made the improvements to the "dinning" area, cleaned and painted the room, placed metal handrails to direct the traffic of people to the serving area. The room is ready for tables and chairs (photos available at fair).

Ones the project is completed - what type of follow-up will our club provide?

Our Club will continue with a weekly presence at Tinajita to make sure that the equipment is serving its purpose, to increase the quality of life of interns. Our Club will provide any necessary maintenance to keep the equipment in good shape.
