A Place to Sleep

Tinajita Jail and Detention Center. Panama.


Brief description and objective of the Project:

Provide 600 small mattresses to fit the iron bunk bed used by prisoners ... Presently, most prisoners sleep on top of the bare metal or put newspapers and cartons as mattresses. Tinajita Jail houses between 600 and 700 people. Living conditions appalling and have been improving since a group of Rotarians from Panama Sur Rotary Club "adopted" the Tinajita Detention Center some 2 1/2 years ago. A core group of Rotarians the "Tinajita Commitee", visits every Wednesday to supervise donations and push for further improvements.

Who and how many people will benefit?

Approximately 900 detainess will benefit from this improvements to their bunk beds.

How will the project be organized and supervised?

By the Tinajita Committee, a group of Rotarians that visits the Jail every week (Wednesday). The Tinajita Committee is very well organized and will supervise the project. The Commmittee has already organized and completed more than 20 different projects at Tinajita in the past two years.

What role will our club take in its development?

Our club will negociate a contract with a "mattress" maker in Panama to make the mattress to our specifications. They will be made of foam, covered by a strong and durable plastic material, easy to clean and made to last.

What will our club provide in the way to funds, personnel, buildings, equipment, etc?

Our Club will contract the "mattress maker" and make sure that the product in delivered up to the quality and specifications required (photos of bunk beds and " living quarters" - galleries available at fair).

Ones the project is completed - what type of follow-up will our club provide?

Our Club will continue visiting Tinajita every Wednesday, and make sure that the mattresses are been put to the best use. Our Club will provide any necessary maintenance to keep the mattresses in good conditions.
